Dr. Oetker began in 1891 in a pharmacy in Bielefeld, Germany. Pharmacist August Oetker developed Backin, a reliably measured baking powder sachet for 500 grams of flour, in 1893. Vanilla sugar, pudding powder and other baking ingredients soon followed, helping turn the pharmacy experiment into a family food business.
