Julius Maggi began experimenting with affordable, nutritious foods for industrial workers in Switzerland in the 1880s. Ready-to-cook pea and bean soups and Maggi liquid seasoning appeared in 1886, followed around 1900 by pressed cubes for soup, sauce and stock. The original idea was practical flavour for everyday cooking.
